How Does Your Garden Grow

About two months ago, I wrote a post bemoaning the state of my yard and the general ugliness of the garden after a really harsh winter.  To be honest, I doubted that even Mother Nature could work her magic on a space so neglected and forlorn.

Remember this? This was April.

But I was wrong.  It’s amazing what a few weeks of warmth and sunshine can do to a space.  And it’s amazing, too, how easily I forget that it’s all out of my hands really–despite not having spent much time getting the yard ready this spring, all my pretty plants came back and now I have this:

You can’t tell me it’s not SOME sort of miracle that I now have this in my yard with almost no effort on my part.

I think I may start keeping a garden notebook–to remind me what blooms when, how much mulch I need (I forget every spring), what improvements I think need to be made next year.  It seems like a really responsible and grown-up, homeowner-y thing to do.  Plus I love making lists.  Maybe tomorrow I’ll pick up a notebook and get started.

For now, though, I’m just going to sit on the patio, listen to the birds, and enjoy the beauty of my backyard.

The beauty definitely doesn’t last that long on it’s own…pretty soon I’ll have to get out there to prevent the weeds from taking over!
