Harry Potter Studio Tour

IMG_5161Way back in August when Bridget turned eleven, we got her tickets to the Harry Potter Studio Tour as a birthday gift.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you should really go on this tour.  If you’re a Harry Potter FANATIC, like we are, this tour is practically life-changing.  I couldn’t even pretend for one millisecond of this tour to be cool; all of us just let our Nerd Flags fly and fully geeked out over the whole thing.  Proudly.

IMG_5243The studio, located just outside London, is where the eight films were created.  Props, sets, costumes, designs and artwork, and every little bit and bot of HP-paraphernalia you can imagine fill this amazing warehouse to the brim.  And it’s magical.

The tour began with a short film, and then the movie screen rose up, and we stood in awe, facing the doors to the Great Hall.

The tour guide asked if anyone was there to celebrate anything special, and B raised her hand to say she was there for her 11th birthday.  And then my daughter, celebrating her 11th birthday, got to push open the doors and lead us all into the Great Hall — basically a Harry Potter dream come true.

IMG_5168You guys, I cried.

IMG_5170The tour was self-guided — we wore head sets and listened to the information that corresponded to what we we were looking at.

IMG_5178Or, alternatively, we just wandered starry-eyed from the Gryffindor Common Room to the Potions classroom to Dumbledore’s office, barely able to contain our nerdy excitement.  I did a little bit of both.

IMG_5204We rode broomsticks.  We drank butterbeer.  We learned to cast spells.

IMG_5221We sat on the Knight Bus and stood at the door to 4 Privet Drive.

IMG_5229We saw the cupboard under the stairs and the door to the Chamber of Secrets and the monument from the Ministry of Magic held up by muggles “in their rightful place”.

IMG_5191We cringed as we stood under the enormous Aragog model and may have squealed with delight — loudly — when we saw the Hogwarts Express sitting at Platform 9 3/4.

IMG_5228The scale model of Hogwarts was stunning.  The concept art was amazing.

IMG_5248There was just nothing about it that wasn’t awesome.  All four of my kids were enchanted.  Matt and I were awestruck.

It was a seriously great outing, and pretty much the perfect way to celebrate turning 11 (I think the only thing that could have made it better is if she ACTUALLY got to start at Hogwarts).  IMG_5184

Also, this was a really cool castle, and this was another fun adventure.  So far, England rocks.
